How about a Mind/Body Accountability Partner?

I have been achieving extraordinary things in my business through the use of accountability coaching, and happened to think:  "What about a fitness accountability partner program?"

All it would take is a few willing bodies and minds, our personal stories, and our fitness goals--anyone wishing to participate, join the Active Rain Fit Club (http://activerain.com/groups/fitclub), post your story, post your goal, and we're all off to the finish line!

Here's mine:

About 25 years ago I was an aerobics and weight training instructor (this was before there was such a thing as a "Personal Trainer", btw).  Over the years, through marriage, childbirth, and congenital spine issues I had battled my wee 5'1" frame into a state of nearly constant pain in addition to the yearly wardrobe revolving door syndrome.

This year, I decided it was time to make a change--a real change, a permanent change, but to make it stick I started slow and small:

  • yoga:  daily, one-half hour

Immediate results, in mind and body--the back issues which had me groaning each morning as I crawled out of bed gradually dissipated to a rare twinge now, six months later.  I was noticibly more flexible, trimmer, and stronger within weeks.  I had more energy--now I actually wanted to take the dog for longer and longer walks, which I'm now coaxing into runs (she's pretty out of shape, too!)

Huge bonus:  people noticed--both the ones who have known me and even those who don't have commented on my carriage, confidence, and appearance

Now I've added:

  • Cardio:  three to four times a week (the dog walks--at least every other day we go 2-3 miles instead of the old 'quickie')

in addition to:

  • sports:  1-2 times a week (whatever I can fit in--tennis, kayaking, tossing a frisbee on the beach, biking)

My next goal:

  • to lose the last little belly rolls so I can have abs (like Suzanne!), and
  • quit smoking (down to only about a pack a week right now)

So...who's next?  Be brave--tell all!  The moral to this story is:  Make ONE Change.

(or, as Nike would say:  "Just Do It")

Excellent ideas!  I did yoga lots of years ago, mainly to keep myself centered.  I had perfect everything and was eating perfect too.  Fish, cottage cheese and green beans for lunch, salad for dinner.  I was also a waitress who walked about 10-15 miles per shift.  People asked me if I had calf implants!  I started working out religiously last year and then got out of the groove.  Every day this year I told myself "this is the day" and failed.  Once pool season started here (and late) I have been spending an hour every day in the pool doing exercises my husband designed for me.  Since our pool isn't a "lap" pool, I added one for me.  I dive down to the bottom and have myself swim as close to the bottom for the length of the pool.  My abs and back shoulders are really showing improvement!

I have been thinking about doing yoga again!

Yay!  Pool exercise is a wonderful way to "get your feet wet" (sorry--bad, reaally bad...)

So, what are your goals for this year, exactly?  What specifically would you like to accomplish?

Sounds like you have made some huge accomplishments!  Good for you.  I think I might have to join your fit club, too.  Having just had a baby has really put a damper on my weight.  My energy doesn't seem too bad, but I know it can be better.  I did yoga in college and loved it.

Hey Maria, thanks for 'joining'!  Yep, after you've had a baby is a great time to start on some kind of regular program--especially while they're still small enough that you don't have to chase them!

Mom's "me time" is also very important--so why not incorporate a daily time slot for you to have some time 'off'--yoga's a great way to do that!  Just remember--one step at a time--baby steps in your case!

I used to walk my baby (who's now 17...oy, how time does fly...), in the stroller in the evenings when it cooled off (summers in Florida are awfully humid), and had a neighbor who was a great motivator as well, and the added bonus is that there's no guilt for taking time away from baby!

Good Luck, and Congratulations!

Loretta,

You are very motivational and very active! My fitness schedule is going through rehab right now! LOL! As my business is picking up my workouts have been suffering. I still get to the gym 3'xs a week, my cardio has been a little off this past week. I would love to get back into yoga maybe soon! Keep up the good work!

;-)

why is it we tend to slack off when we need it the most?!?

thank you for the supportive comments--I try...I do.  My favorite yoga is on FitTV every day three times a day--Namaste Yoga.  I have a DVR and record the show in case I miss the 8:30AM one.  They don't do anything TOO advanced, and the scenery is always nice--Seattle, I'm pretty sure.

Right now I'm on a 2-week "De-Tox Diet", trying to work on those expose-able abs (since I just pierced my belly button as incentive...), and hopefully rebalance everything...
